Determining the correct 1964 Sebring paint color for #004 was an important challenge. After 35 years, several paint jobs and at least one previous restoration, finding any original paint that old would seem unlikely. Fortunately, however, as the paint was carefully stripped the original silver blue was indeed discovered under the fuel filler flange (the half moon shaped piece shown above). Close examination revealed the following chronological paint layers:
  • factory gray primer ('62)
  • white ('62'-'63)
  • silver blue ('63-'64)
  • Daytona blue ('64)
  • and several layers of white ('65-'80)
…exactly per #004's timeline. This original sample of '64 Sebring silver blue was carefully color matched using authentic 1960's acrylic lacquer paint.

As GS#004's paint was stripped, an even more interesting paint sample came to light: the original 1964 Sebring fluorescent red center stripe (it had been protected under the rear window molding). For documentation purposes, both of these original paint samples were carefully preserved.
